Municipal Market of São Paulo

The Municipal Market of São Paulo (Mercadão) is a large public market in the historic center of São Paulo, near the Tamanduateí River and Dom Pedro II Park. It opened on January 25, 1933, as a wholesale and retail post for fruits, vegetables, meats, spices, and other foods. Today, the first floor is filled with retailers, and the second-floor mezzanine serves as a restaurant. You’ll see 450 tons of food pass through daily in over 290 stalls.

A bit of history

Designed by architect Francisco Ramos de Azevedo, the market was inaugurated on January 25, 1933. It was formally named the Municipal Market of São Paulo in 1995. A major renovation in 2003–2004 added a new mezzanine with eight restaurants, new exterior lighting, and granite floors.
